Lunarians Event  ISBN/ITEM#: 0503LC
Date: March 18-20 / Show Official Info /

Lunacon 2005 was held in a new location, the Sheraton Meadowlands of New Jersey, March 18-20. Guests of Honor were Writer: Michael Swanwick, Artist: Butch Honeck, Fan: Skip Morrison, and Costuming: Pierre & Sandy Pettinger. Other advertised participants included: Ellen Asher, N. Taylor Blanchard, Ginjer Buchanan, Storm Constantine, Keith R. A. DeCandido, Michael Flynn, Esther Friesner, Gregory Frost, Gordon Van Gelder, Laura Anne Gilman, Peter Heck, John Hertz, Alexandra Honigsberg, Walter H. Hunt, Lissanne Lake, Paul Levinson, John Ordover, Josepha Sherman, Susan Shwartz, and many others, including the musical group the Boogie Knights. Considering that New York remains the center of the publishing world, the convention seemed to be missing a number of well-known writers and editors.

As this was their first time in this hotel, there was the usual learning curve in trying to make best use of the available space and people had to get used to the absence of the usual transdimensional corridor. There were also problems with registration as the convention had four people taking money, but only one person entering a rather lengthy form that had to be processed before printing a person's badge. (Hint to future cons, just print out the names and the forms can be entered in later). People without cars said it was hard to get to food places although the hotel did sell sandwiches in the lobby.

Lunacon had many, many tracks going simultaneously, with as many as 15 different activities going at once. Programming was eclectic, ranging from quilting to the Tarot to zombies and included a silent film festival and lots of after hours programming. While there seemed to be a greater-than-usual emphasis on gaming, fan fiction, costuming, and other sub-genres, there were also tributes to Avram Davidson, Lovecraft, Hunter S. Thompson, Kelly Freas, Jack Chalker, F. M. Busby, and Alfred Bester.
