When a couple of the girls escape and turn up in the swamps of Louisiana, Gator Fontenot is sent to retrieve them. Gator is a member of a Special Forces attachment of the army called the Ghostwalkers, especially trained for dangerous exercises such as this.
Although Dr. Whitney may be dead, his adopted daughter, Lily, herself one of the enhanced children, takes over the project. She is particularly concerned with one girl, Iris "Flame" Johnson. One method Dr. Whitney used to enhance the children was cell mutation. "Flame" was the one chosen to suffer through these painful experiments, and, although the enhancement has made her very powerful and very psychic, she developed cancer from the response of some of her cells. Although Dr. Whitney developed drugs that sent the disease into remission several times, it continues to recur.
The swamps are Gator' stomping grounds. His grandmother and brothers live there. His grandmother, a very determined and unrighteous little lady, finds "Flame" in Gator's room where she's gone to retrieve a piece of her equipment he has taken. Grandmother, or Nonny as everyone calls her, decides Gator has to marry the girl.
Gator finds "Flame" a person to contend with. She does not want to return to the hospital where Dr. Whitney experimented on her. However, it becomes obvious that the cancer has come back, and, while "Flame" and Gator battle to save another girl from an unscrupulous man, the disease is eating away at her body. Both "Flame and Gator can use sound to kill, another of their enhancements.
Gator and "Flame" fall in love. They each, in turn, discover a much softer, more human soul buried in their super-enhanced bodies. Gator becomes determined to get "Flame" back into the hospital, hoping a new drug can once again send the disease into remission, or perhaps even cure her. She continues just as adamantly to refuse to return, sure Dr. Whitney isn't dead and that Lily is working with him.
Night Game bristles with super-enhanced battles and the sex scenes sizzle. This is a book that I'm sure you'll find difficult to put down. I've always enjoyed Christine Feehan's books, but until now had only read her Carpathian series. After reading Night Game I felt compelled to order her two previous books in this series - Mind Game and Shadow Game. A fourth book, Conspiracy Game, will be released in October of 2006.
