Dusty and Dick Carrick grew up believing in pixies and enchanted by the Ten Acre Woods, a local parkland adjacent to the Skene Falls Historical Museum. Once a close friend, a local developer now hates Dusty and plans to ruin the fund raiser and the museum where Dusty is the Assistant Director. Setting her sights on the Museum and the Ten Acre Woods, she convinces the mayor to sell and trouble begins. She times her actions to coincide with the Museum's biggest fun raiser planned and managed by Dusty.
In childhood, Dusty suffered leukemia and ended being protected and home schooled. Thistle, a pixie from the Ten Acre Woods, was her only friend. The child grew into a shy woman who hid from any interaction with others. Taking a stand for what she believes is a major challenge.
When Thistle is exiled from the Ten Acre Wood and turned into a human, she wakes naked in the Memorial Fountain. When police find her, they arrest her for drunkenness and nudity. Panicked, she asks them to call Dusty and they release her into Dusty's custody. Thistle wants to return to pixie form, but can't. Neither can she enter the Ten Acre Wood.
Thistle becomes Dusty's ally in her fight to save the museum and the adjacent woods. The local police chief who loves Dusty joins them. They find surprising allies among the ladies of the town, but Dusty must overcome her life-long habits.
This new series, The Pixie Chronicles, appears to appeal to younger adults rather than to mature audiences and more to female readers than to males. Some teens will identify with the timid Dusty and root for the spunky Thistle.
Irene Radford has several successful young adult series, three about dragons and one about Merlin's descendent. She signed a three book contract for the Pixie Chronicles series. The second, titled Chicory Up, is slated for June 2012.
