The Willful Princess and the Piebald Prince is a grim fairy tale by Robin Hobb of a dark legend from the popular Farsee series. It describes the upbringing of Princess Caution Farseer, her companion Felicity, and Caution's attachment to Lostler, the handsome groom. That attachment ended with Caution with child and Lostler and his piebald horse dead.

Some of the nobles resented Charger, Caution's child, and wanted his cousin, Canny Farsee on the throne instead. Despite Charger's acceptance as king, they continued to look for ways to change the kingship. The rivalry between Canny and Charger only intensified when both fell in love with the same woman. Hobb provides a nice twist at the end.

Some readers may not like the tale of woe and deaths, but fans of the Farseer Trilogy are sure to welcome the insights it provides. Hobb is a well-known writer of fantasies and has a number of trilogies including the Farsee Trilogy and Rain Wild Chronicles, which features dragons. She also writes as Megan Lindholm.
