Rachel Morgan is going to enjoy a lovely dinner with Quen at a really expensive restaurant. She's pretty sure what he wants and that he'll be disappointed with her answer. But before they even get seated, they learn that another Rosewood baby has been stolen from the hospital. And we're off on another adventure to save the kidnapped babies, the ever-after, and our world.

Ever After is a full out action adventure from the first chapter. While this time Rachel is making an effort to think things out before she acts and trying to lessen her usual collateral damage, she still tries to do it herself to avoid feeling pain and guilt if her friends get hurt. This time there is the added tension of the changing relationship between Trent and Rachel that began showing in Pale Demon.

Of course, nothing is ever easy for Rachel. Ivy is out of state. It looks like Rachel's ex-boyfriend, Nick, is involved in the kidnappings along with Jenks' son, Jax, which brings in a lot of emotional baggage. As if that wasn't bad enough, Al pulls Rachel into the ever-after because she's being blamed for the shrinking their world and Ku'Sox wants her killed. The demon council gives her three days to fix the problem -- or else.

More than the overt problems, this is a book about relationships. Jenks takes pride in the work he does and in his children. Trent and Rachel have a confusing emotional tension that neither one of them seems to want to admit to or do anything about. Rachel feels that all the problems that arise in her area are somehow her fault and the guilt gets in her way of dealing with them. These personal and emotional problems impact all the decisions and planning.

Harrison balances the main plot and all her characters deftly to keep the reader entertained and invested in learning what happens next. There are some very big changes that occur as a result of this story -- playing out before you in the subtext.

Fans of the series will, as usual, be overjoyed with this new installment. If you're new to the series, you'll miss some of the nuances but you'll be able to follow the main storyline without any problems as there's enough backstory to bring new readers up to speed.
