Dave vs. the Monsters:
* Emergence
* Resistance
* Ascendance
After defeating the Horde in New Orleans, Dave heads to Vegas for some rest and relaxation. He finds it in the form of several ladies and a line of credit. He is slowly turning into a super human. He is stronger, thinner, and his hair is even growing back. He even has a man to take care of some of his problems including his ex-wife, tax issues, and cash flow. Boylan, quickly begins to set things up. Things are definitely going Dave’s way until the Government decides that Dave is to good an asset to wander around without control.

The attacks of the dragons leaves planes grounded and concern about new fronts of battle popping up anywhere. One of the new assaults with a special plan leaves Dave a hard choice. One he doesn't regret, but the world might.

The hordes of the Underworld begin to boil up all over the world. The hordes are in for a surprise. Humans are not as weak as they were the last time the horde was able to harvest the surface. The tactics of the countries vary, but victory seems assured. Dave's choice will loom large as the horde begins to learn from its captives in a way similar to the Brain Bugs from the movie version of Starship Troopers.

One of the new fronts creates a big problem for the U.S. One of the questions that I was left wondering about in the first novel of the series was answered in the second story. Can others who defeat a War Chief physically also attain the knowledge and powers that Dave received? The answer to that question sets the stage for the next novel, due out very soon.

This is the second book of the Dave vs. the Monsters series. It is a bit different from some of the earlier works by Birmingham. It is a new look at an old trope. Monsters coming to invade earth. I like that the monsters are not ridiculously immune to all modern weapons. That is a problem with many monster stories, the monsters have high velocity rounds bouncing off them and only a lucky shot can take one down.

I definitely like the development of Dave. He is a stereotypical redneck to start with, but as his powers grow so does he. He spends time delving into the nature of family, friendship, and consent. The only thing missing was the confrontation with his ex-wife. I expect to see that in the third volume and look forward to it.

As part of a series it is not the best starting point. The novels are quick entertaining reads, so it isn't a great burden to pick them both up.
