It was a clear cold late fall day in NYC, and the wind whipped up and down the streets leaving no doubt that winter was as close as the holiday store displays suggested. Inside the Society of Illustrators club on the upper East Side though it was cozy...and crowded. Jane Jewell, organizer of the soiree, says they lost count of folks coming in, though they tried. Final estimate: around 300 folks, many authors and editors, but many just friends or people from the publishing industry.

I'm not sure whether it represents a changing of the guard, or what, but though the crowd was pretty good, there were faces I missed - Tor Editor David Hartwell for one. Gardner Dozois was there, wing in a sling and all. After a while his name tag started to make the rounds by itself, turning up on a number of people I know for a fact weren't him.

To try and tell you all the people who came would require half of the SFWA directory and I suggest instead that you pop over to the photo site (www.e357.net.photoreflect.com) to see for yourself. Next year maybe I'll send Bob Devney to get quotes and I'll just come along for the pictures.

By the way, you can send e-cards for free from the photo site, so feel free.
