Breaker is a young man from the small village of Mad Oak. People here get their names from events and personal characteristics. Breaker was rather clumsy as a child. When The Swordsman comes to the village looking for a successor so he can retire, Breaker figures it beats farming for the rest of his life. Taking the older man up on his offer, Breaker trains dutifully until he's ready to take up his new responsibilities. Of course when he sets out into he world to learn more about it, the Wizard Lord, and the role of The Chosen, he's forced to face new societies, new standards of ethics, new prejudices, and oh, did I mention, an insane Wizard Lord? Now all he has to do is find the other seven Chosen, although he has no idea who or where they are, and then go confront the most powerful wizard in the world, and kill him, without getting himself killed in the process.

This book is the first in a new trilogy, but it's complete in itself, so I'm unsure how the remaining volumes will be approached. This one spends a good amount of time introducing the reader to the laws of nature and magic, and just how different things can be. Breaker, as a naive protagonist, works well as an introduction as we learn about the world along with him.

A fun read, not too serious, but with some good potential.
