Already Dead: A Novel
by Charlie HustonReview by Gayle Surrette Del Rey Paperback ISBN/ITEM#: 034547824X Date: 27 December, 2005 List Price $12.95 Amazon US / Amazon UK / Show Official Info / Joe Pitt has created a niche for himself in the underworld where such creatures live. He's a Private Investigator. He's got an HIV positive girlfriend and maybe he could cure her but then she'd be a vampire with all the horrors and problems that entails. He takes the cases that interest him and pay the rent. On his own he rids the area of undesirables and the latest are the zombies and the one creating them. But he leaves a mess, and now he's got to find the prime zombie maker on his own time while hunting down a human vampire-wantabe teenager for her mother. It turns out the mother is wealthy, human, and knows about vampires. Pitt has to take the job because he owes the vampires referring her a favor and they don't take kindly to nonpayment of debts. Only the father has other plans, and not pretty ones, for his daughter. Before long, Joe's blood supply is stolen from his safe box and all the vampire clans seem out to get him. He's hungry. He's angry. And there's something 'other' out there killing people and it's not a vampire, a zombie, or anything he knows about. He can barely control the hunger; but he's determined to get the girl to safety. It's not a new story but a new implementation. These are not Bram Stoker's vampires and the world is not nice and neat. There are variations and differences that make things a bit off kilter but it's all coherent and consistent within the book. Things move fast and it was an effort to keep up with the pace of the narrative--you can only turn pages so fast when reading. Highly recommended.
