The World of Manga -- Gollancz Releases
by John Berlyne Review by John Berlyne Essay ISBN/ITEM#: MangaArt05 Date: November, 2005 / Show Article / From official release/information: I don't know the first thing about Manga - though of course, these days a Google search serves as an instant education. First stop is Wikipedia , which if you haven't already discovered it, is a must. There the highly detailed entry for Manga immediately brings virgins such as I right up to date. Thus armed I feel able to comment on what is a particularly interesting experiment by Gollancz - the UK's leading SF/F publisher, for they are (to the best of my limited knowledge) the first major UK house to try their hand at publishing Manga comics, thus bringing this form (I should say "art form") to a wider English speaking market. This is a significant and bold move, given that up to now, Manga has largely been a niche market, the domain of comic fiends and those "in the know", and with HarperCollins announcing at the recent Worldcon that early next year they too will be launching a line of Manga releases, it perhaps signals a shift in where our genre publishers feel the money is.
