Once again, Tom Piccirilli has given us a flawed main character. Dane can see ghosts a result of trying to run a roadblock and going through a windshield. He's not necessarily a good man though he isn't evil either. His morals are more ambiguous--he simply wants to get through life without actually having to put any effort into it. He loves to drive and used to drive a cab and after prison he got a job driving a limo. He's warned away from his neighborhood, there are attempts on his life, he can't seem to remember to get his grandmother sweets, and ghosts want him to fix things for them. Angelina wants revenge for her death and Dane wants the Monticelli's to leave him alone.

It's a convoluted story and you are never exactly sure what is going on. When it ends, you don't really know whether you should be happy for Dane or pity him. The use of language is such that you can't pull free. You find yourself sinking into the prose; it's like watching a movie in your head--you don't so much read the book as watch it. Piccirilli's characters are believable and the situations are darkly edgey but they resonate with so many issues that you can't stop thinking about them.
