When the European delegates arrive, Sophia goes wild and tries to kill Alonzo before the introductions can even be made. Now Betsy's got to try to come up with a solution that will please everyone. Alonzo created Sophia and then abandoned her to wake and fend for herself years ago and doesn't even understand there is a problem or why he should apologize. Sophia cannot forgive and forget; she wants him dead. What's a queen to do?

There is a slight shift in this book. Betsy's character is that of a selfish, self-centered, brat, though when something or someone gets through to her, she really cares and her heart is in the right place. In Undead and Unpopular, Betsy begins to learn that the world doesn't revolve around her. Jessica has been ill for a while and Betsy doesn't even notice until Eric and Tina ask Jessica about it because they recognize the smell coming from her blood. Garrett (A.K.A. George the Fiend) tells Betsy that there is a zombie in the attic and she just blows him off because she knows there are no such creatures. There's more to life than having good shoes and Betsy begins to get a hint that maybe she now has to look outside herself and actively watch out for others. Being a Queen is more than having people, or in this case vampires, respect you. You have to earn respect by actions and while Betsy doesn't want to dominate and terrorize her subjects, as has been the custom, she now recognizes that she can't ignore her subjects either.

I've enjoyed the series so far and I'm truly looking forward to the next book in the hopes that Betsy grows into her responsibilities as a sister, a surrogate mother for her stepbrother, as a friend, and as a Queen -- but you still need the right shoes for the occasion.
