The Nymphos of Rocky Flats: A Novel
by Mario AcevedoReview by Steve Sawicki Rayo Paperback ISBN/ITEM#: 0060833262 Date: 14 March, 2006 List Price $13.95 Amazon US / Amazon UK / Show Official Info / Felix Gomez, vampire, is called upon by an old friend to investigate some strange goings on at a secret military facility in Rocky Flats. Seems that, while getting the facility ready for closure, something was dug up that turned all the female employees into nymphomaniacs. Felix is hired to find out what happened since all of the material from the facility is being shipped somehwere else. As Felix digs he discovers that not only is not everything as it seems but there's some pretty odd stuff going on as well. When the Eastern European vampire hunters show up things get really odd. The writing in this novel is well done and the pacing fairly quick. The elements that Acevedo tries to weave together sometimes clash, such as the forest dryad that seems to be just thrown into the mix for the purposes of forwarding the plot or the all powerful vampire secret society that never really seems to do anything. There are other instances, as well, where convenience seems to be more important than creating a believable whole world. And that's okay because the book is a quick read and has some humor to boot. I'm not sure it lives up to the jacket blurbs but it's good enough that you'll want to finish it once you start.
