From official release/information:

Recently there has been an explosion of children's fantasy trying to follow in the footsteps of Harry Potter. Fablehaven is a worthy addition to the crowd and should be enjoyed by nine to fourteen year olds looking for a magical adventure. While complete in itself, this first novel by the author is also the first in a series.

The book opens with 13-year-old Kendra and her 11-year-old brother Seth left in the care of their mysterious grandfather (whose wife is apparently visiting a dying relative). His large estate is protected by warning signs reading "Certain Death Awaits" and the two children are warned to stay out of the woods because of Lyme disease ticks. The Grandfather also gives Kendra a key ring with three small keys and challenges her to find what they open. The two children find that the estate is full of beautiful butterflies and hummingbirds that are strangely attracted to mirrors, to the point of flipping it over when it is upside down. When Seth disobeys the rules and goes wandering in the woods, he is scared by a bent old woman in a tiny shack and a scary puppet called a limberjack. Seth calls her a witch but Kendra does not believe him.
