The Chronicles of Faerie: The Summer King

Melling doesn't pull her punches there are consequences for actions and Faerie isn't all beauty and light, there is a dark side. While we often dwell on the wonder of the faeries at the bottom of the garden, there are as many or more stories of humans who have lost their souls and lives to the realm on the other side. The girls set out to have an adventure, but adventure comes with the chance of loss and death -- the stakes are high and teens or no, they must play the game and risk not only themselves but their friends lives to win free of their fates.

These are fully developed characters. The girls are the same age but of totally different, but complementary personalities, strengths and weaknesses. While Finvarra, King of Faeries, chose Findabhair, the fact that Gwenhyvar has the same name and is a worthy adversary adds to the mix. Then Finvarra begins to fall in love and if Gwen wins then Findabhair will be sacrificed. The interactions and interrelationships are mixed and interesting. This is a story you can get lost in because you begin to care so much.

As an added bonus the book has a Glossary. Now only does it give you the translations of the Gaelic words and phrases used throughout the story but it also gives pronunciation guides so you can learn a few words if you try.

Read and enjoy, I did. Don't let the Young Adult designation scare you off -- seek it out and share with a young reader.
