Both Dainyl and Mykel have strong talent, the ability to use life force to affect things around them. Mykel must hide his ability because if alectors know of his talent, he will be destroyed. Dainyl knows of Mykel's talent, but can't afford to lose an effective commander. Dainyl's talent is changing as he becomes more tuned to Corus. Both are also linked by contact with the ancient race of soarers.

The soarers also have a plan. They have not shared their plans, but they have warned Dainyl that he must link to Corus or he will not survive. The Duarchy is in shreds, as alectors try to prepare for the aftermath of the Master Scepter's transfer. The chaos created by this infighting and the instability caused by the scepter's transfer creates an opportunity, but how will the soarers fight the alectors?

This is the sixth book in the Corean Chronicles. It completes the trilogy that started with Alector's Choice and Cadmian's Choice. As the concluding volume in a trilogy, the first two books need to be read to fully appreciate and follow this story. The three Choice volumes can be read independently from the other three books in the Corean Chronicles. Although there may be other Corean stories to be told, this may be a good place to end the series, on a high note.

By the end of this volume, you will understand the foundation of several of the countries that were in place at the time of the first three volumes of the Corean Chronicles. That was a wonderful conclusion. I thought that this story might explain some of this, but I was a little surprised as to who founded what.

I especially enjoy the way Modesitt writes characters. The details that he shares create believable characters, that are both powerful and flawed.

I can recommend this book and series especially to those who have enjoyed his Recluse books.
