My Big Fat Supernatural Wedding
by P. N. ElrodReview by Drew Bittner St. Martin's Griffin Paperback ISBN/ITEM#: 0312343604 Date: 03 October, 2006 List Price $13.95 Amazon US / Amazon UK / Show Official Info / L.A. Banks leads off with "Spellbound", wherein two feuding families may have buried the hatchet with a wedding... but is it love or magical mischief? With "Something Borrowed", Jim Butcher follows with his first short story of Harry Dresden, Chicago's only wizard listed in the Yellow Pages. Harry's the best man at his werewolf friend's wedding. Unfortunately, with Harry, things never go smoothly and he must fight to help his friend through what may be a very dark fairy tale to get to "happily ever after". Rachel Caine breaks away from her Weather Warden series to present "Dead Man's Chest", the story of a wedding that starts off on a cursed pirate vessel and only gets weirder from there. P.N. Elrod herself offers a reincarnated Elvis as a wedding singer in "All Shook Up", while Esther Friesner's "The Wedding of Wylda Serene" suggests that a country club haunted by creatures from Greek mythology may not be an ideal wedding site. Other major draws in this collection include: Charlaine Harris' "Tacky<", in which a vampire bridesmaid has to overcome her prejudice-- and a very unexpected threat-- as her friend marries a werewolf; a Dark Hunter and his new Squire discover mutual attraction may lead to mutual destruction in "A Hard Day's Night Searcher" by Sherrilyn Kenyon; and Susan Krinard offers a wedding-day murder mystery for her detectives Kit and Olivia in "...Or Forever Hold Your Peace". Wedding provides strong value across the board. Butcher's story is one of the very best, though "Serene" is a terrific and funny tale from Friesner (which should be no surprise to anyone). Likewise, Harris deftly shows both sides of the vampire/werewolf prejudice, and has a neat trap laid that would play off the animosity between both sides. It's a good story and well-deserving of its headliner status on the book's cover. Fans of paranormal romance will especially enjoy this volume, though fans of any (or all) of the contributors will find much to enjoy among the various stories. If you haven't tried one or all of these writers, now is your chance! Recommended.
