Artist: Dave Seeley
by Gayle SurretteSFRevu.com Interview ISBN/ITEM#: A-DSEELEY Date: October 2006 / Show Article / From official release/information: Dave Seeley was kind enough to agree to kick off SFRevu's Artist Interview feature. Dave as you will soon learn is very talented and has probably done a lot of the book covers that you've enjoyed. He will also be artist Guest of Honor at LunaCon 2007.
In his own words: For several years he practiced architecture while his desire to make art was subverted to art collecting. In 1989 He tracked down artists Rick Berry and Phil Hale to buy a painting, and soon afterward began late night collaborative painting over beer and Irish whiskey with the two of them. Seduced by the charm, glamour and immediate gratification of image making, he derailed his career as an award-winning architect to mainline endorphins produced by making images. "I think I'm far more influenced by modern day sci-fi film noir than by illustration in the industry today. I find inspiration within the fine art world as well. I certainly tend toward the painterly in non-digital work. I often tackle a piece from the ground up with photo-collage in the computer. I also work in traditional media, largely oils, and pencil and then take a partially developed image into the computer, add photo-source images and work it to some degree with color, filter and lighting manipulations…and when time allows, I oil paint over archival digital prints for a finished piece...MIXED MEDIA."You can see printed work in The Workbook, and in SPECTRUM: The Best in Contemporary Fantastic Art volumes 4, 5, 6, 7 and 9, 10, 11, 12 and 13, and in Ballistic's ExposÉ 3 and 4. I am one of 10 artists featured in Dick Jude's Fantasy Art Masters by Harper Collins (ISBN 0007137478). I'm also featured in the documentary film by Michael MacDonald at Roadhouse films called Visions From the Edge: The Art of Science Fiction.
