Taking place shortly after the events in Touch the Dark, Cassie wants control over her life, to know where her father is, and to find out about her history, heritage, and powers. She's now got the powers of the Pythia but no training on how to deal with it. Myra, who trained to be the Pythia for years, wants to get that power for herself and she's helping Tony, who probably killed Cassie's family and everyone she's held dear, had her spied upon, and manipulated. She also learns she's under a powerful geis which won't let her have sex with anyone the geis doesn't think fits the rules, and it's strong enough to kill if the wrong person gets too close emotionally. Top that off with trying to babysit the the Graeae (Enyo/horror, Deino/dread, and Pemphredo/alarm) and Cassie's got her hands full and the reader is off on another wild ride.

I enjoyed the first book which obviously colors my enjoyment of this, Karen Chance's second volume. But, I think it's fair to say that if you liked the Touch the Dark, you're going to like Claimed by Shadow. Many of the same characters carry over with a few added for more mayhem, temptation, machination, deviltry, confusion, and diversions. Just like Cassie, you never know what's going on. Cassie, short for Cassandra so you know what trouble she can get in, has no more information than we do as readers. She has to act from her heart and her belief in what she's doing. Cassie does want revenge for what was done to her but more importantly while she wants justice, she doesn't want it at any cost. She's seen what 'end justifying the means' can do to people and she doesn't want that.

Cassie moves forward coming to grips with her powers, her allies, and her responsibilities. This is a series that is going to grow and develop with time but the core characters all have multi-faceted personalities and back stories that keep you guessing about what has gone on and, since Cassie can flip through time, the possibilities are nearly endless provided that the boundaries for this power are set so that real consequences can occur when used incorrectly.

A bit more sexual content than I'm really comfortable with but then I'm of the camera stray to the fireplace, fade to black, and back to our story kind of person. But that's my only downside to this series.
