Plague Year
by Jeff CarlsonCover Artist: Adam Jones (Photo) Review by Gayle Dixon Ace Paperback ISBN/ITEM#: 9780441015146 Date: 31 July 2007 List Price $7.99 Amazon US / Amazon UK / Show Article / Plague Year is a masterful debut novel that has me putting Jeff Carlson on my must-read list without a second thought. Survivors of a human-created epidemic must live above 10,000 feet elevation, creating islands of safety and sometimes starvation on Californian mountaintops. Colorado becomes the refuge of organized and well-equipped government and wealthy refugees. The idea that ski resorts could be the last bastion of civilization is amusing, but the author did his homework and the details on chair lifts, skiing, and ski resorts are right on the money. I trust his research on the science behind the epidemic and the politics of science are similarly sound. From official release/information: Book Description: The Machine Plague wiped out five billion people, forcing Earth's survivors to live at an altitude above ten thousand feet. But time is running out for the remnants of the human race, and their only hope is a scientist aboard the International Space Station desperate to cure the plague. (Source: Ace)
