Issue #9 of Apex Science & Horror Digest is another good one. We get nice stories from old pro William F. Nolan and prolific pro Kevin J. Anderson. I also liked stories from Lavie Tidhar, Daniel LeMoal, Jeremy Adam Smith, Bev Vincent and others. There's also some nice interviews!

The latest issue, #9, of Apex Science & Horror Digest is a good one. I rated all but one of the stories Very Good. The issue starts out with "The Sum of His Parts" by Kevin J. Anderson. It's a different take on the Frankenstein story. Where did Victor Frankenstein get all the parts that became his monster? Here's the answer. The next story was the only one that didn't quite work for me. "The End of Crazy" by Katherine Sparrow deals with people with schizophrenia coming off a new medication. It's not a bad story, it just ends with very little resolved. Lavie Tidhar's "The Gunslinger of Chelem" deals with a man acting out Old West gunslinging in his dreams but really killing people. To stop him, they need an ultimate Western hero. In "Locked In", Mary Robinette Kowal gives is a two-page thriller.

"Projector" by Daniel LeMoal tells us of a future where two generations of drug use has developed "projectors" who can force hallucinations on people. What powers do the third generation have? Veteran writer William F. Nolan contributes "At the 24-Hour" a scary little story about a special customer at an all-night diner. "Pyramus and Thisbe" by Jeremy Adam Smith is a far future take on a classic love story. In "Sufficiently Advanced", Bev Vincent shows us a human who is marooned on a planet of people who he thinks are primitive. They actually are very advanced, but not sufficiently enough.

"Don't Show Your Teeth" by Rob. D. Smith is the story of a horror film fan who takes his hobby a bit too far. "Cain XPII: The Voice of Thy Brother's Blood (Part 1)" by Geoffrey Girard is a serial that I'll review when it's completed. The issue completes, as usual, with an Apex Parting Shot in "Sonorous" by Paul Abbamondi. In this one, someone finds a whistle and blows on it, ill-advisedly.

With nice interviews & articles, this is well worth picking up.
